An industrial gas supplier sought a full-service lift solutions provider to both dismantle and transport an industrial gas cold box. The process required Maxim to transport each module to a neighboring port facility and place the modules in temporary storage before a third-party took over ocean transport to a United States aerospace manufacturer. This major project’s heaviest module lift was 243,000 lbs.

The Challenge

Since both lifting and site heavy transport were required for this mighty job, the client needed a one-stop shop to handle both of these tasks. The weight of each lift, combined with the delicate nature of industrial gas cold boxes, meant that state-of-the-art technology, unmatched expertise, and unrelenting collaboration were necessary. Managing load stability, preventing structural stress or deformation, navigating tight clearances, working with existing plant operations, and port coordination were all challenges that were addressed early on in the process to minimize safety risks and maximize the outcome. Winter weather posed an additional challenge as freezing temperatures brought snow and ice to the site.

Our Approach & Solution

To ensure maximum efficiency and safety, the Maxim team began planning for the lift and addressing potential obstacles long before the lift occurred. Collaboration and communication between the client, Maxim, the port facility, and the aerospace manufacturer was clear and consistent starting day one of the project. The demanding nature of the job prompted the Maxim team to bring in one of the best cranes in its fleet, the new Tadano Crawler CC24 Main Lift Crane. In response to the weather conditions, the crew arrived on site several hours early to de-ice surfaces and ensure the weather would not pose any safety risks.

Equipment Used

Maxim utilized top-tier lifting equipment for this project, specifically selected for the site’s constraints and load requirements:

  • Tadano Crawler CC24 Main Lift Crane: 440 ton with 255’ main boom
  • Grove All-Terrain GMK7550 Tailing Crane: 550 ton capacity
  • 18-line Goldhofer PST Self-Propelled Platform Trailer

Results & Impact

As a result of this project, the client’s resources have been safely handled and staged for ocean transport to a different part of the country. Maxim’s full-service solution allowed the client to tackle two major components of this job through one solutions provider. This project demonstrates Maxim’s ability to deliver equipment and solutions of the highest caliber to energy providers who seek to adapt, upgrade, or simply change their existing infrastructure for any reason.
