Crane Engineering FAQs

A crane lift plan is a detailed and comprehensive plan that outlines the steps and processes involved in safely lifting and moving heavy loads using a crane. Crane lift plans are tailored to the specific job site and load to be lifted, and they provide guidance and instructions for crane operators, riggers, and other personnel involved in the lift.

A crane lift plan is important because it ensures safety, efficiency, compliance, communication, and risk management during the crane lift. It outlines the steps and procedures involved in the lift for personnel to follow, considers potential hazards and risks, and promotes clear communication among the team to ensure that the lift is coordinated and executed safely. Following the crane lift plan helps to minimize unnecessary delays, maximize efficiency, and reduce costs, and ensure compliance with legal regulations and safety standards.

A typical crane lift plan will include information such as:

1. Job site information – location, terrain, site access, etc

2. Load information – weight, dimensions, center of gravity

3. Crane selection and configuration -crane model, configuration, and attachments to be used for the lift.

4. Rigging and hoisting equipment – types and sizes of rigging equipment and hardware to be used for the lift.

5. Personnel and training – qualifications and certification levels of crane operators, riggers, and other personnel involved in the lift

6. Pre-lift preparations -site preparation, setup, and inspection procedures to be performed before the lift.

7. Lift procedures – The step-by-step procedures for rigging, lifting, and moving the load

A crane lift plan should provide essential information required for safe and efficient completion of the job. This includes crane type, weight requirements, dimensions, sequence, lifting route, location details, personnel, restrictions, possible hazards, and lifting diagram. These factors need to be considered while creating a detailed lift plan that identifies potential hazards and outlines the steps for the lift operation, including personnel requirements and equipment attachments. By analyzing these factors, engineering companies can ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance during the lift.

Crane engineers perform various types of analysis to ensure the safety and effectiveness of crane lifts. The common types of analysis performed include structural analysis to assess the crane’s strength and durability, load analysis to determine the lifting capacity and identify potential hazards, dynamic analysis to evaluate crane behavior during the lift, ground conditions analysis to ensure stability, and risk analysis to minimize hazards and ensure safety.

Crane rental engineering services can be down in house or by third parties. Some examples of engineering services include:

  • Lift planning
  • Rigging studies
  • Lift equipment design
  • Lift equipment selection
  • Load cut sheets
  • Ground bearing pressure analysis
  • Site plan & Site drawings

A standard lift plan is used for routine crane lifts that involve minimal risk and do not require complex engineering calculations or risk assessments. For example, a standard lift plan may be used for lifting small equipment or materials onto a low-rise building.

On the other hand, a critical lift plan is used for crane lifts that involve a high level of risk or complexity, such as lifting heavy equipment or large structures to great heights. Critical lift planning involves detailed engineering calculations, risk assessments, and extensive coordination to ensure the safety and success of the lift.

The customer will need to supply an accurate lift weight, rigging locations, rigging attachment details, location of the center of gravity for the load, any limitations on sling angles or degree of level requirements and a site plan.
